User Submitted Hewlett Packard Jornada 680 Handheld PC Reviews (cont...)Date: 2000-04-02 Its not perfect but it is useful I have been using my Jornada for about 6 months and so far I have been pleased. I especially like the fact that I can use the built in modem and web browser to get on the internet and keep current with my mail while I am on the road. I find that on most of my short business trips I can get away with just this instead of my laptop. I wouldn't want to do too much typeing on it but I find I can edit documents and simple spreadsheets on it pretty effectivly. Date: 2000-03-04 There are better alternatives... I like the hand-held "PC's"... but not this one. They are terrific for certain functions... basic word processing, email... carrying contacts out on the road... but the HP 680 just doesn't hold up. The hinges broke after only a month of use on the road. HP would not cover the repair under warrenty... because "pry marks voided the warrenty".... OK, but try to change the battery without leaving pry marks. I've since moved to the NEC MobilePro 780... It's much better constructed, holding up to wear-and-tear much more robustly. It's also lighter and gets better battery life... a much better alternative to the Jornada. Date: 2000-02-06 Don't bother wasting your money. $800.00 for a little computer? That's crazy! Especially when you can buy a lowend laptop for about the same price and have alot more functionality. Forget the small size. The Small size can't compensate for the lack of compatibility with all Microsoft Office Products. This product is over-priced, incompatible, and a big waste of time. Grab a Palm Pilot for 1/3 the price of this and you get the same functionality as this product and less headache. By the way, if you want color, wait for the Palm IIIc due out later this month. Date: 2000-01-31 I like it! I've had my Jornada 680 for a few weeks now and already I am wondering how I managed without it. This is my first PDA, although I am familiar with PalmPilots as a number of my co-workers have them. I spend a good portion of my time every month outside of the office. I needed to be able to check my company e-mail and message boards, keep track of my schedule and contacts, use the internet, and e-mail images captured with a digital camera. My Jornada does all of these very well. I don't have the sync problems with Outlook that the PalmPilots do and the color screen is a must have! Would I buy one again? Yes, without hesitation! Date: 2000-01-05 Great for some tasks-- but back it all up! When I first bought it, I thought it was fantastic. Most of the components were intutive-- tasks, contacts, calendar, etc. I was salivating at the prospect of mantaining my portfolio, ideas, managing my schedules only through my PDA, not lugging my laptop to meetings, and the rest. This dream lasted a week. First, the pocket excel format could not be opened by the excel I had on my desktop. Second, dont ever suspend your device with Word running a large document. When you restart it does a "cold boot" and woosh! all your data is gone! Third, good luck if your company uses Meeting Maker and you try to get it synchronized with schedule+ and then the PDA. Fourth, if your Word document is heavily formatted good luck transferring them back and forth. Fifth, same goes for powerpoint. In short, if you want to do basic word, excel, powerpoint + standard PDA stuff, this will work-- and backup the stuff often. Otherwise get a light laptop. I just returned my Jornada today. :(
