OmniSky Minstrel V Wireless Modem review
I think that this item is very good as I have a Palm Vx and am getting this item for my birthday. It would be really cool to be able to take my Palm anywhere I want and also go on the internet.

Minstrel-less
Why they named this product "Minstrel" is beyond me, as it's capacity to put on a convincing minstrel show is completely absent. I busted some of the gears up (or whatever these doo-hickey's have) trying to smear on some black application. Plus, this thing doesn't even sing classics like "De Boatman's Dance", or "Stop Dat Knocking." 2 stars.

OMNISKY IS GONE - product useless
I purchased this product on ebay for about 10 bucks. Well, that's all it's worth these days. With Omnisky being bought by Earthlink and Earthlink stopping the service, it's completely useless. I'm surprised to see this here on Amazon.

Excellent if you have specific needs
This is a useful addition to Palm V and IBM WorkPad C3 (a relabeled Palm V offered by IBM) PDAs. It's relatively low speed and has limited functionality compared to more up-to-date PDAs, especially with respect to browsing and email. On the other hand, it's the only mobile wireless solution for the Palm V family, so if you need on-the-road email that can handle attachments, or the ability to browse any web site without restrictions you either need to upgrade to a newer PDA or use this device.

I like it because it's relatively inexpensive, even with the recurring monthly charges for the associated service, and it extends the usefulness of my Palm V. I am an occasional mobile wireless user and can live with the limitations cited above and in other reviews. Note that Earthlink is now the service provider and their customer service is among the most responsive and helpful in the business. This is a quantum improvement over OmniSky.

The questions boil down to (1) Do you need wireless mobility? (2) Does Earthlink's service coverage coincide with the areas where you will be using it? (3) Can you live with the limitations, or should you either upgrade your PDA or consider one of the 3G PCS wireless plans and phones, such as the Sanyo 4900 and Sprint PCS Vision plan?

Yes it works, but.....
I used this service for a year (Omnisky was giving the modems away then). What I found was that it retrieved my email OK and it let me access some web sites OK, but it was not great at either. The biggest drawback is that the Palm OS won't let you view attachments. What I ended up doing was borrowing a computer when I was on the road and accessing my email throug webmail. While that was a hassel sometimes, I didn't have to carry all the plugs and chargers etc. as well as my Palm. You see the charger for your Palm won't charge the modem. You have to carry a separate charget for it.

The perfect solution is yet to arrive (though it is close). Save your money and wait until their is a CE based PDA with continuous wireless access that also has a phone included and that has coverage all over the US. When that gets here, your investment will pay off.
