Date: 2001-03-07 If I were single, I'd marry it! I love it. Simple as that. It's not a bulky laptop (and they can be unwieldy, you know that) and it's not a cramped up palm-size. The screen is almost full width, so I don't need to do a lot of scrolling left to right to see a web page, I can write up documents with the keyboard and I can see quite a lot of text, and best of all, it's got Microsoft Office, albeit in pocket versions. It's ready to hand, it's not fussy, it does the job. I can move stuff to and from a "real" computer easily. Mind you, the synching business takes a bit of experimentation until you get it right - make sure the port settings on both ends are correct, start connecting and then be quick about putting the plug in. Sometimes it takes a couple of goes. Oh yeah. I love the MP3 player. I can fit a few songs on, with a card drive a lot more, and while I work I can listen to my favourite songs. Natalie Cole is singing to me even as I type. I love it!
Date: 2001-02-23 worth the effort I bought this so that I would not have to always carry around my laptop (I travel quite a bit) I use the basic programs (word, exel and email/web primarily) and for these it works well ALTHOUGH getting email/web set up was quite a trial and you can only access it (at least for compuserve and my company's internal system) through terminal mode which is a hassle. The keyboard is small but so am I so while it works for me might not for someone with large hands. Also, unlike my palm VII there is very little available add on software out there yet because the StrongARM processor is still too new and most software works for the other types. Overall though...I do like it and I am happy I bought it...may bot worth quitethis price....
Date: 2001-01-31 An excellent small Mobile Computing I am a Network Engineer, and I made this purchase for the main purpose of configuring my Cisco equipment which spans through out the US, without carrying around my Laptop, and all its accessories. This little HandHeld does a great job- I can download/Upload IOS easy, I can troubleshoot my network-(Using Cambridge Software)I also do reports and Slide on Word and Powerpoint- It has served me well. I purchase the 1GB Micro drive, and socket LE- CompactFlash I, Lan card- That works very very well. Yes AOL that comes with the system works well- All that was needed , was going to the AOL site and creating a screenname. For anyone on the move - This machine will serve them well- Just remember ITS NOT A DESKTOP, and you'll love it- Syncing with Outlook- Calendar, Contacts, and Email was extremely easy- Even with two different machine- Home/Work. EXCELLENT JOB HP! Look forward to new software-
Date: 2001-01-26 Good keyboard for small children I really wanted to love this machine, but the love was short-lived. 20 minutes after using it, I began packing it up to send it back. My beef: the keyboard is poorly designed, both in terms of the size of the keys and their action. You should know that I was using a Psion 5 so I had very high standards in this regard. I assumed that since the 720 was about 10% bigger than the Psion that its keyboard would be bigger too...but no; it's even smaller. I also found the touch screen more less responsive than the Psion's but the resolution and colors are fanstastic. The rest of the hardware seemed well thought out, although more "plasticky" than I expected for the price. The software seemed very good, very much like having a miniature version of a Windows-based PC. For those who are interested, I ultimately bought a Psion NetBook and am quite happy with the decision.
Date: 2000-12-21 No Support for unreliable handheld. The Jornada 720 is a wonderful idea, beautiful package. Too bad it is not reliable. My first 720 hummed along fine for less than 24 hours, then the modem just quit. Because HP has no 24 hour tech support, I was on the phone with my ISP while they kindly tried to solve the problem--on and off, trial and error--for nearly four hours. Finally the next day when HP was open for its "banker's hours" support for customers, the first two techs were reading to me out of a book. No clue as to why the modem was silent. A third tech finally agreed the modem was defective. Would HP do an express exchange? Not unless I wanted a refurbished 720 when I had just paid for a brand new one. Luckily the vendor was excellent where HP was not, and gave me an immdeiate exchange. The second 720 arrived with the screen loose on the right side and the brightness uneven going from left to right. And, while the modem dialed in and connected, it could not connect to any pages off Jornada's home page. After another hour on the phone with techs, I gave up. It looks great, and when it was working it seemed great. But two out of two machines with problems and absolutely no help from HP and no interest in customer satisfaction...well, that's unacceptable for (an expensive) handheld.
