Very different than other handhelds...
I find that I'm the kind of person who wants to purchase the "top-of-the-line" in gadgets. However, I am also the kind of person who can't ever afford it. So I have to be an efficient shopper to get satisfaction. I must have read 50 or more reviews for this product (and a select few others)before I decided to purchase it. I knew that since I was ordering it I would not like the idea of having to send it back. The majority of the reviews I read on the T415 all complain of a screen that is anything from irritatingly dim to impossible to use. In fact numerous people claimed to have returned the T415 in favor of another handheld. I was disappointed to hear this since I really enjoy higher resolution whenever I can get it and I LOVED the idea of being able to customize the alarm sound however I wanted.
I finally got the chance to...check it out on display. Now I understand the problems that people were having.......they need to take more vitamins and get their eyes checked. I ordered one right away. The screen is head and shoulder above all the other handheld I have seen. I LOVE the that I can get more information on the screen at once. That means smaller fonts and icons people! If you can thread a needle, you'll handle this gadget well. I you cant even see a needle when you hold it in you hand, look elsewhere for you plam device. The sound function is as cool as I expected. Don't expect to throw out all your stereo equipment or anything but it's cool none the less.
The screen doesnt have the same near iridescent background as a few other palms and some digital watches but it is not noticably dimmer than any other LCD screened device. (cell phones, calculators, ect...) I own a wizard organizer and the screen is slightly clearer and many time sharper that that. PLUS the bluish hint to the the gray scale along with the black on the screen actually makes this more of a "duochromatic" rather that monochromatic pda. Two colors rather than just one.

If any of the features above are intriguing to you, I recommend you choose the T415. Provided you don't want to spend the extra cash for the color version of essentially the same device. The color version does have I clearer screen as is expected...it's COLOR for pity's sake. You get what you pay for.

I must agree that I have not yet found the solution for the button problem. I dont mind the shape. I dont mind the tiny scroll "lever" (it's not even really a button). I just can't seem to stop the thing from turning on no matter where it is. Pocket, briefcase, soft pda case, wherever. I'm currently looking into some sort of hard case but there are few options for such a unique sized and shaped device.

Amazing, but not perfect
I use my Clie mainly as a tool at school, and it works very, very well. I used a Handspring Visor for about a year and a half, and once it finally broke on me (twice), I replaced it with the PEG-T415. As a tool, it is superb; the Graffiti (handwriting) recognition seems better than the usual, which makes note-taking much, much easier.
As a graphics device, it is outstanding. Obviously, a color screen would improve this aspect of it, but for a grayscale model it is very, very nice. The 320x320 resolution looks great, and I can see how the MemoryStick feature could come in handy.
Design-wise, the PEG-T415 is also outstanding, for the most part. It is very, very thin - take no notice of any numbers, just think it's about as thin as one of those little tiny spiral-bound notepads, and almost weightless. The biggest design flaw are the application buttons, which often get pressed by accident, wearing down the battery, and the somewhat inconvenient stylus compartment. The screen WOUlD be hard to read in dim light, were it not for an exceptional backlight which works nicely and the option to thicken the fonts in almost every situation (as is the case on all PalmOS handhelds).
Overall, it's a real beauty for the price, and you'll be satisfied with it, provided that a color screen is not a necessity.

Great Purchase
At first after reading CNET's reviews, i was a little hesitant b/c they said the screen was horrible. I went to my local electronics store, played around with one for five minutes, then came home and ordered one. I love the high resolution screen. Although it's not color, the price and the screen more than make up for it.

well worth the money!
First, I must admit that this is my first PDA ever. I wasn't sure if the "grafiti" writing system would appeal to me (a laptop user) and I wasn't quite sure what I'd use it for. If you're the type of person who writes phone numbers or important addresses/information on the back of old receipts you find in your car only to forget them 10 minutes later, this is a tool for you! I can't count how many important numbers I've lost... and I'm only 22.

Before purchasing this item I made sure to shop around at my local electronics stores. I compared it to palm-powered devices in its category: Palm M505, Handspring Visor Edge, etc. I have to say I was enamored with this little machine from the second I saw it. Not only is it the thinnest PDA on the market, it also has the highest resolution display. Now I know some people might have complained about the contrast/darkness in reviews here and on epinions... but I must say that I have found no problems with it - in fact, the contrast button/menu (which most, apparently aren't aware of) is simple to use. The backlight is also fantastic.

Since I'm only going to use it for the Address Book, Date Book, To Do List, and Memo Pad I really couldn't care less about the other bundled applications - I'm going to use this as an organizer... nothing more. I must say, however, that the extra applications look tasty (a photo and movie program, world alarm clock, memory stick utilities, etc.). The problem with these, and the only problem I have encountered so far, is the complete and utter lack of Mac OS support.

Since the Sony lacks direct Mac Support (there is a program called "missing sync" but I'm not really interested) I will never be "hot-synching" my Clie to my computer - it will be a stand-alone device. So, if you're looking for a great organizer or even a multimedia PDA (if you have a PC) this is really about the best you can do at this point (not counting the color version) and you won't be making any compromises. Grafiti, as it turns out, is as easy as printing in all Caps and it took me all of 10 minutes to master the basic functions of this beautiful, aluminum, sleek, thin, utterly gorgeous little machine. :)

The Just Right hand held
First of all, let me say that the concerns about this PDA's dark screen are overblown.
This hand held unit, for an extremely attractive price, offers all the features that anyone could really need. For all practical purposes a color screen in a hand held is overkill and just adds to the cost. The list of features in this unit is long and very useful. It has the cradle that serves as a battery charger and for sync. with your PC. It has a long battery life, incredible resolution, a backlight if you feel that the screen is somewhat dark (which it really is not), capacity to show stills and movie clips. It has an 8mb memory which can easily be added to with very reasonably priced Sony memory. I bought my unit for less than $250 and that price included an extra 64mb of memory!! Now that is value. Add to that the reliability of Sony Clie and you have got a winner. If you are contemplating a hard working, very handsome, slim, feature packed PDA, you will definitely be not disappointed with this jewel.
