A fine PDA but not a great one
It is a good PDA but for shure it is not the best one.
the Cons.

1) is the battery life is not the best one, and if you don't charge it frecuently you can lose all your data, it had happen to my just twice in the 9 moth that I had own it
2) It is big,
3) you can not upgrade it to Windows Mobile 2003
4) it has the worst sound

Pro.

1) the USB/VGA expansion pack is great
2) the Wi-Fi integrated

Also I lost the stylus pen, so I bouth from Toshiba the pack of 3 stylus pen, for my soprise they where Belkin pen's in a Toshiba case. and they are really bad because they scratch the screen.
I use screen protector, and I have to change it every 3 weeks becouse the replacement stylus pen scrach it.

Piece of Junk!
I bought this new. It has never, EVER been reliable. Connection quirks, storage quirks, lockups, you name the problem, the E740 can produce it.

I've tried upgrading firmware, software, OS and still I have a $600 piece of junk on my hands.

I DO NOT recommend this product - spare yourself.

My condolences...
I'm not an e740 owner, but I got very close to buying one, I'm happy I learned how crappy it is in time! I've had an iPaq H3630 (yes the very first one!) since it was released - people complained about that too, but never in the same way as with this Toshiba PDA! I've only had to replace the stylus lock (done it myself!), otherwise I had no problems whatsoever, not even with tired batteries. I'm using the latest ActiveSync and I've even dropped it on the floor a few times!

Compaq did it and did it right the first time, and they support their products, sometimes even after they've been discontinued. They said they would release a PPC 2002 upgrade and they did - even at a reasonable price, too bad PPC 2003 won't fit in a 16 MB ROM, otherwise I think they would have released that too...

I'm in the market for a smaller, faster unit with built-in WiFi (and preferably also Bluetooth) and built-in CF slot - too bad the DELL Axiom X3 doesn't have Bluetooth and CF, otherwise I would go for that - any recommendations? (same features as the Toshiba, only reliable and equally aggressively priced).

Good luck to all you unhappy Toshiba users...

the customers were the test subjects
I had bought the Toshiba e740 in March '03. It was great with the 802.11b and everything else, but then came some problems. A recall was issued and i needed to send my unit back. Next, the pda would die out on me for no reason, or it would die intermittently when i would shut it off. I think Toshiba's customer service was great, as compared to what many other people say about Toshiba's customer care. The only thing irking me most of the time was the fact that Toshiba brushed the E740 off their website completely for the e750/755, and probably knowing deep inside that the E740 was an experimental PDA used on the customers to root out problems. I found myself using my old Dayrunner most of the time, which is pretty much defeating the purpose of me buying the e740.
I had since gotten rid of the E740 in exchange for an E755. It's worth buying the E750/755 rather than dealing with the E740, even though the used/refurb prices for the e740 look attractive. The E750/755 is faster, has a much better screen size and clarity, can be obtained with Windows Mobile 2003, and still supports the Hi-Capacity battery I used for the E740.
