Date: 2003-01-24 Great entry-level value The Sony Clie PEG-SL10 is a great value for those wanting to buy their first PDA, but can't justify the ... price tag of higher-level models. The less-than brilliant (although hi-res grayscale) display, USB cable instead of a cradle, and AA batteries are acceptable price-feature tradeoffs. On the upside, you get a backlight, the Palm OS, Memory Stick expandability, Jog Dial, and a sleek design and small size that beats the similarly-priced offerings from Palm and Handspring. The software bundle is also great.Tip: hang onto the stylus. The standard flip-cover does not protect it from getting snagged and pulled out of its "silo." Replacement styli are available from Sony, but are [costly]. Third-party replacements (e.g., Fellowes) are functional, but rather flimsy -- they'll make you appreciate how well-designed and made the Sony stylus is, with its heavier metal body and removable reset tool.
Date: 2003-01-23 Great low end PDA This is a great PDA for the money. I have owned 3 palms, after each crashed I gave up on the palm line. Over 1 year ago, I bought my wife one of the first Sony PDAs on a clearance sale. After seeing the quality of the Sony product, I decided to invest in the PEG-SL10 for myself. The size is a definite plus. It is not as clunky as the palm models (around the same price range). The software it comes with is great and the product is easy to use. Although this PDA doesn't have all the bells and whistles, its a great, functional tool for those who don't have time to play PDA games and just need an organizer.
Date: 2003-01-22 Most features for the lowest price! Here's why this PDA is great: - 8 MB is plenty of room for a PDA, however, the memory stick option allows you to increase by 128 MB. - Superb resolution, can display monochrome pictures as well as MPEG videos (or some equivalent). - Design is classic Sony, jog dial, "back" button, overall size and weight are perfect. - Excellent software preinstalled allows you to work with and synch Word/Excel documents. - Blows the comparably priced Palm Zire out of the water in terms of resolution, memory, and functions. - The price is first-rate; this piece of kit would have cost a lot of quid just a couple of years ago. - It has infrared capability for sharing information and hot-synching. - Great battery life. - It uses Palm OS. Here's why you may NOT like this PDA: - It's not color (although color only adds to the cool quotient, it does nothing for your information). - The high resolution makes the letters hard to read, honestly, if you're over 50 you will likely hate it (but you can increase the font). - The stylus is very thin and hard to manipulate for people with less than dexterous hands (but you can buy a replacement). - Uses a USB cable instead of a cradle for hot-synching. - No audio to speak of other than the standard beeps and buzzes. - Uses standard AAA batteries (although I considered this a plus, I hate high-maintenance technology). - It's the lowest line, so it won't impress too many people (if this is your primary motivation you wouldn't even be considering this product). Overall: As you can tell I am really happy with this PDA. It is better than the PEG-SL20 because it's $$ cheaper and doesn't rely on rechargeable batteries (the SL20 doesn't use a docking station; you have to plug in this giant serial-port-looking cable). I also use a Sony Digital Camcorder with memory stick, this allows me to film short videos or capture low-res pictures and view them right on the PDA. I have an IR port on my laptop which allows for simple, albeit slower, synching back to the mother ship. These capabilities are fun but not too important. This is my third PDA and by far the best. You cannot beat this little Sony. Finally, I do wish I knew how to pronounce "Clie."
Date: 2003-01-21 Excellent PDA for 1st Time User I bought this inexpensive PDA because I was not sure how much I would use the PDA in my job as a nurse practitioner. I have found it easy to use, and it has quickly become indespensible to me. I use the Epocrates tool constantly, as well as the Johns Hopkins Antiobiotic Guide. I have also found the calendar to be very helpful in organizing my busy schedule. The features specific to this PDA really seem to make in stand out above the rest. The Jog dial makes scrolling through text very easy, and the high-resolution screen is very easy to read. Initially, I found the font "thin" and hard to read, but on the recommendation of another reviewer, I used the Thin Font Fix program, and now the font is very easy to read. The backlight is very nice in low light situations. Having AAA batteries rather than lithium ion is an advantage to me -- I bought my own rechargables to use, but I also have the flexibility to grab some alkaline batteries in a pinch. I give the PDA 4 stars rather than 5 only because I am a Mac OS user, and was annoyed that the Clie did not support this platform. I fixed the program myself by downloading free software from Palm. (You do not need to buy the Missing Sync software.)
Date: 2003-01-20 Screen too dark Even though this is a great PDA if you ever have to use it in poor lighting conditions you will strain your eyes to see anything. Basically the screen is dark so unless you are in front of a bright light you won't be able to see very much. I ended up returning mine.
