User Submitted PalmOne Tungsten C Handheld Reviews (cont...)Date: 2004-11-30 Great product for airplanes, starbucks and wifi access I bought this primarily bcoz it has wifi access. I have wifi setup at home. This is much easier to use as compared to laptop for quick internet access. I also use it starbucks and airports, as I signed up for tmobile wifi service. I also store work docs etc in this, and use this to browse the docs, while travelling. I am still waiting for a device that couples mp3 + personal video player + wifi internet access + voip phone + normal cell phone + gps capbilities into one box. Date: 2004-11-12 My life is in this little gadget's grasp! I bought this unit basically to use as a calendar...what a mistake!! THis device is everything that it claims to be...and more! Wi-Fi is so awesome. Find your signal and start surfing! The thumb pad keyboard is a true benefit. Entering with graffiti definitely takes time getting used to, but the thumb pad is a great alternative. The battery life is incredible! I have used this device for documents on the run, databases, class lists, grade books, schedules, to do lists and so much more. The price on these is coming down, and well worth the price paid!!! Date: 2004-10-07 Good performance, but keeps crashing The PalmOne Tungsten C is my third PDA. I first bought a Handspring Visor Deluxe in June 2000. After that one got stolen in January 2002, I got myself a Palm m500. That one had some serious screen problems by the end of 2003, but fortunately I got a free Tungsten C at a Wifi conference I attended around that time. In general, I am quite satisfied with the Tungsten C. I remember very well how amazed I was with its speed, when I used it the first time. Of course, one gets used to that after a while. The color screen is of good quality. But again, once you have color, you don't really pay attention to it. I think for most basic palm applications (agenda, to do list, calculator, dictionary, etc.) color isn't very crucial, but the fact that there are different colors just make the usage more comfortable. But of course there is more than just these basic applications, like viewing your own pictures and videos. Especially with a baby son, it's always nice to be able to show friends what he looks like at the moment. There is a lot of memory in the Tungsten C (64 MB). That doesn't only imply you practically don't have to worry about how many pictures and videos you want to carry along. You can also install just as many applications as you want, for example dictionaries and ebooks (my favorite). And even if you're about to reach the maximum, you can always make use of memory cards. Of course, the Tungsten C comes with the interesting feature of Wifi connectivity. Especially at home, where I have Wifi plus a DSL internet connection, it is very nice to be able to check email early in the morning or when I get home. I don't have to switch on my computer to find out there is no (interesting) new email. Of course sending email is an option too, but since entering text remains more cumbersome than on a standard keyboard, this only saves time when you want to send a really short message. The web browser is not optimal, mainly because many web sites are designed for larger screens. Especially scrolling horizontally impacts the usability and you often unwantingly hit a hyperlink when you only want to just scroll. But sometimes it is also very nice to watch a movie on TV and to be able to instantly look up information about the actors on www.imdb.com. But my favorite on the Tungsten C is: synchronizing with my computer with Wifi (no more cradles and cables)! The only really big problem I have with the Tungsten C is that it keeps crashing. PalmOne's web site always suggests that this is probably caused by installed third party software, but I doubt that. My Tungsten C has crashed most when using the web browser (right after opening the first page, which in fact causes me never to use it anymore), and recently also when watching videos. I even sometimes have crashes when simply using the "Find" feature. So once in a while I do a hard reset and wonder which applications I should not install again. But I never find out a difference, so I stopped worrying about installing applications that I trust. Sometimes I suspect the crashes are just caused by using the memory card, but other days I get the feeling it's because I use too much of the Tungsten C's own memory (although I never really came much further than 50% usage). I probably never find out the actual reason for the crashes. I guess PDAs will always have some things that need to be improved, just like PCs. I wonder what my next one will be able to do for me! I might need one again next Fall, if I keep replacing them in the pace I have been doing so far... Date: 2004-10-06 Nice features; works great I've had my tungsten C for about two months now and I've had no problems with it crashing (but then I don't use it to surf). I got it mainly for the Wi-Fi, but I've found the other features very nice for productivity. The keyboard has proved to be the nicest feature. Although I'm fast at graffiti, I'm still faster and more accurate with the keyboard typing with 2-thumbs. With the document exchange program, I can open up a new word or excel file on the pda, and type in brief documents on the keyboard. Obviously I wouldn't do manuscripts, but for short memos, it's fine. When I get to my office, I link the files back to my desk-top and polish them off there. It's a nice way to get 'errands' done while I'm stuck on a long bus ride. The versa-mail feature also works well allowing me to download e-mail via Wi-Fi or from my desktop at work (no Wi-Fi) and then work on it when I get a few minutes free. These features are available on other PDAs, but I find that the keyboard definitely helps me use these features more avidly. The 'toggle' button that lets you move up/down/left/right is also quite handy. I've had no problems with Wi-Fi. Turned it on and was ready to go. Surfing with it though would not be worth it to me with the small screen -- except maybe pulling up the news. I use it to download e-mail. Although Wi-Fi works great, in retrospect Bluetooth linked to a cellphone might have been a better choice for me given the frequency with which I'm not in a Wi-Fi area -- although you would be surprised how many people in Seattle have unencypted Wi-Fi networks in their home. It doesn't come with a case, just a dinky cover. Plan to get a more serious case to protect it. I got the hotsync cable to be able to charge and sync it via my laptop (and car) when travelling. It works nicely. Date: 2004-09-30 Great palm, just don't break it--terrible customer service Palm Tungsten C is a great device, it has only one major problem--it has the most fragile screen of any handheld I have ever used. What complicates the issue is that Palmone has absolutely the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. I bought an extended service warranty, which covers one screen replacement. I have now called Palmone customer service multiple times to get my warranty validated and my repair order completed, and each time they give me some lame excuse about servers being down--call back in two days. How their servers can be down for weeks at a time is beyond my comprehension. Worse is the fact that each time you call, you are calling some sweatshop in a back alley in Mambai, 12000 miles away from any US territory, and talking with a depressed Indian whose English is passing at best. Each call is an exercise in futility. "We are sorry sir, but please call back in 2-3 days." Forget about talking to any sort of customer complaint department--there is no way to contact any part of the Palmone US corporation. They have about 5 cute little faqs on their web page, and the phone number to their lousy customer service in India. Palmone is great about taking your money, but beware when you are trying to ask them to complete a warranty contract. Just remember as you are considering what Handheld to buy that someday you may be in the same position--banging your head against a wall. --Concerned palm owner
