Better than prior model...but still underpowered
The latest most powerful ipaq from hp is an improvement...but still is in no way a "pocket" pc or a laptop replacement.

Just trying running more than one application at the same time (streaming a video and checking mail, etc.).

Definitely not a device for the business/enterprise yet, but the promise is there.

Only true improvements over prior models is a/v streaming (but not over vpn network, encrypted wifi, or while bluetooth headset is attached), and the VGA screen.

Just try loading PPC applications with network drives mounted or browsing large corporate networks...be ready to reboot...and I reboot it probably 40+ times daily with heavy use.

It's a great toy/gizmo...but definitely not a serious device yet.

I'm still waiting...these PDAs are still underpowered by 400% or so.

LOVE IT!
I just received my hp product and I began playing with it. For the novice, it is a bit difficult to figure out all of the software and gadgets, but I'm optimistic. Well, contrary to those who say that this is heavy, I prefer to say it's solid. It doesn't feel too heavy and although the specs. may be similar, it's feel is much better than the 5455. It's sleek and solid. The screen clarity is absolutely beautiful. Wi-fi is simple to use. I am having some trouble connecting to my bluetooth phone. I am most likely doing something wrong. The touchpad is cute but a little strange to use. Not too practical. I find the stylus is a much better and faster way to get around. I love this ipaq. By far the best I've had!

Super-fast, but big and heavy, poor customer support
The HP iPaq hx4705 (and its 4700 cousin, which is identical except for a slightly different bundling) is clearly a corporate Pocket PC. It packs a powerful processor and loads of RAM. The 4" VGA screen makes surfing the web and using Excel practical, compared to old Pocket PC's 3.5" quad-VGA screens. The hx4705 includes both wi-fi and Bluetooth, but neither of which works well: frequent dropped connections and (in the case of BT) difficulty of establishing partnerships make wireless a chore rather than productivity booster on this Pocket PC.

The biggest cons on the hx4705 are:

1) Homely styling. This is clearly not a cute toy or iPod-fashion. It's actually more than just plain; it's pretty ugly.

2) It's big and heavy.

3) The screen is washed out outdoors. Indoors it looks great, but I have a hard time with the VGA resolution outdoors.

4) Poor battery life, esp. if you leave wifi or BT on.

5) It's too expensive. Well since it's designed for the corporate office, it just has to be expensive since its designers wanted to include everything including the electronic equivalent of a kitchen sink.

The value of the 4705 is further diminished by HP's poor customer support. It's next to impossible to find someone who can help you. Accessories are alawys out of stock and way over-priced, too. This is definitely NOT a consumer-oriented company.

Should you get the hx4705? If you are a consumer, forget about it. This is way over-equipped and you won't use 90% of the features (or they are too hard to learn anyway). I'm not even sure if corporate power users need something so fancy. On the other hand, if you drool over VGA and wireless, and have the deep pocket, this could be a versatile (if ugly) toy for you.

Newest and Best PDA
I've had about 7 PDA's starting with a Handspring DX. I went on to CLIE's and decided to go to PPC.
My first was a Toshiba e740 and I don't really want to go into the problems that I had with that one. Basically it was terrible and so was customer service. I then went with a Dell Axim 5 ADV because I thought that it had the most bang for the buck. It was very good at what I needed it for and it served me well for 2.5 years. I gave it to my son and decided to splurge on an IPaq.

This 4700 is great. Plenty of ram, fast processor, dedicated graphics processor ( I don't play many games, but you can't believe the display with some 3D games ), 2 card slots and WiFi and Bluetooth. Sure it is on the high end regarding cost, but I can say that this is more of a notebook replacement than a PDA.

If you're looking for bang for buck, check this out. Remember, you get what you pay for.

The best iPaq to date!
I buy a new pda every year and I've acquired tons of experience on these devices. From teh Apple Newton to the this awesome machine I've seen em' all, and I'll tell you, the PDA has come a long way and this is the latest tech. If PDa's were cars, then the Dell AximX30 is a 2004 Mercedes-E500, the Treo 600 is an 2004 760iL BMW, the Axim X50v is a 2005 Porsche 911 GT Carrera, and last but now ay least, the Ferrrari Enzo...is the iPaq hx4700. When you watch the Lord of the Rings Return of the King on the iPaq (use Pocket DVD Studio to transfer DVD to PDA) you will be blown away by the VGA screen. Furthermore, this has one of the biggest screens available, a whopping 4.0" display (considered a cinema screen in the handheld world). Next, it has Wi-Fi (802.11b; wireless internet; if you go to Starbucks often, whip this baby out, go to Internet Explorer and surf the web by checking the last stock quotes, stream music, watch news clips, etc.) and Bluetooth (a technology to communicate with other high-end devices like the Sony Ericcson P900 phone) in addition to infrared-which it obviously has too. It has 192MB of which 80MB is iPaq storage ROM. And, it has the fastest processor ever made, an Intel 624MHz that can be overclocked by special software to about 660MHz easily. Two card slots allow the owner to use an SD card and CF Type II cards-I use a Lexar 1GB SD, and a 5GB Seagate Microdrive to watch movies and listen to music. Last, it has the first finger touchpad for pda's like the ones in laptops in which you use your finger to move the cursor.

Pros-
4" 640X480 VGA screen
Processor Speed
Wi-Fi
Bluetooth
CF/SD card slots
Windows Mobile 2nd Edition; the latest handheld OS as of Nov 2004
ATI Imageon 3220 graphics chip
Software (Cleartek Powerpoint Prentation)
Included Screen Cover-broke prev. pda's screen w/o this

Cons-
1. 4.5 Hour Battery life in "real-world usage"
2. Screen gets VERY Hot (this a Pro in winter though)
3. If you're a software-monster with like 15 installed apps, this pda starts to become like a real pc with 15 sec. boot-up delay.
4. Trackpad really isn't that great, true it's innvoative but not really practical for users
5. Screen cover PLACEMENT-it's annoying and always flipping backwards since it's horizontally placed-like a young sister
6. Price- like I said, it's a Ferrari Enzo for the few at $650
7. Speaker-this really is a problem with EVERY PDA in the market
