User Submitted PalmOne Tungsten T5 Handheld Reviews (cont...)Date: 2006-05-07 I hate this Palm I have been using a Palm for the past 6 years and this is by far the worst. It is constantly crashing. I had to get rid of all my fun custom programs which is why I used to love the Palm so much. The touchscreen is SLOW! (I'm guessing because of the Flash memory) It is hard to really get good use out of it. Even the most trivial things are wrong with this Palm, like there is no power light. This means you can't tell whether or not it is charging. I'm so angry about that. It often takes several nights of me plugging it in, thinking it is charging all night only to wake up and realize that the cable (mind you, they got rid of the cradle) was loose. It is a good thing that it uses Flash memory because I have drained the battery several times with this circus act. I don't like the new big size. It doesn't fit into my old reliable case which I had for 6 years and was very secure. I like to clip the palm to my belt. This thing is so big that it is constantly hitting my leg when I sit down and falling off. So, I keep it in my bag now and don't use it nearly as much as I used to. I loved the old Palms so much, they were quick, adaptable, portable and decently reliable. But this thing is a clunking pain in the butt. I am really ready to at least investigate the Pocket PC's. Date: 2006-04-05 Palm fan says 'Awful' For some time I've been buying a new Palm every couple of years. This is first time I've really regretted my purchase. I'm now on my third Tungsten T5, having sent one, then another, in for warranty "repair." (Really, they just replaced it.) The second one froze up and died after only one month. At least the first one had lasted a few months before it died. Even the replacement I just got crashes with regularity. I haven't even installed any third-party software on it yet. The touch-screen goes completely out of alignment every few hours, sometimes so badly I can hardly get into "Settings" to fix it. The SD card reader is also not working. I probably won't send it back over that though, because I'm sick of paying to send it in for "repairs." When it's working properly, I generally like it. I'm annoyed that it has no "vibrate" function, though. I don't know why they eliminated it. And I wish it had WiFi capability instead of just Bluetooth. At this point, I'd really just like to get my money back but it's too late. Date: 2006-03-25 dreadful I have had the T5 now for about a year. I am surprised that I put up with it for so long. It constantly freezes. The web program is buggy. Today I lost all my settings. In short what you read here is correct. This is a flawed product and should have never been released. Stay away from it. Date: 2006-03-18 I like it, but there's room for improvement. I initially started out with a Palm IIIxe and was looking for the same kind of robustness and stability with the T5. I'm sad to say it didn't fare very well against the IIIxe in terms of stability. Here are the plusses: - Has a wi-fi attachment ( $100 item they give for free if you buy the T5 ) - Has bluetooth - Can work with MS Office documents ( word, excel, etc ) - Has a customizable display, ( 90 degree turn, hide the graffiti area ) - SD Card slot. - Plays music - Can store/display pictures The wifi attachment ( which plugs into the SD Card slot ) works nicely and is able to connect to my wireless router and I'm able to check email and browse the web, although because of the small screen size, it won't let me browse to some pages because they are too large to display on the unit. I'm able to check my email on yahoo, do basic yahoo/google searches, the essentials.. But I wouldn't be surfing the internet with this thing because of the limitations I just mentioned. Bluetooth is nice, it integrates with many bluetooth devices. When bluetooth is kept always on, it will drain your batteries more quickly. I usually only turn it on only when I need it. I've been able to find some neat tricks to be able to perform a hotsynch operation via bluetooth link to my host PC without ever requiring any cables or cradles. That works quite nicely. I also found an app on the internet which will let me integrate a Microsoft bluetooth keyboard that I have with my T5. It works most of the times, but the M$ keyboard is not as portable, so I find myself not using this integration feature very often. The MS Office integration is very nice. I use this quite often. I usually download from the internet the e-books I want to read and make them into a MSWord document. Then I send them down to the handheld and I can read the book quite conveniently, flip the display 90 degrees, and dispense with all the toolbars and have most of the display being used for showing the text of the document. I'm quite happy with this feature. I have used it for viewing powerpoints and excel spreadsheets but I find myself doing a lot of scrolling to work with the document. The customizable display is a very nice feature because of the display limitation, sometimes it helps to transpose the display by 90 degrees and view the display in landscape mode instead of portrait mode. Also you can hide the graffiti area which can cut down on the amount of scrolling you have to do. This is a nice feature that I didn't have in the IIIxe. With the SD card, I can very easily copy files onto the card and not have to worry about synching every time to get any data onto the handheld. I usually use the SDcard to copy eBooks, maps, mp3s, etc onto it from a host PC and then just plug it into the handheld and bring it up here without any problem. There is a nice "file manager" like utility in the handheld which lets me move, rename, delete files from the SD card which comes in handy. Also there is a feature on the T5 called "drive mode". You can attach the PDA to a host PC's USB port via the hotsynch cable and turn on "drive mode" and your PC will recognize your PDA as an external USB storage device. You can copy files back and forth to it, it will let you work with both the SD Card storage and also the builtin storage on the T5 as separate drives, I found that to be a handy feature for moving files in and out of the thing without doing a hotsynch operation. It doesn't let you go into "drive mode" via a bluetooth link though. It has real player pre-installed and can play mp3's for you and has a headphone jack as well as a speaker. It works without any issues, I haven't used it so much myself. Of course the battery drainage is a concern. It doesn't have ability to record any sound, but if you really need to do that, buy a separate mp3 player/recorder only for that purpose. A pda should not furnish for you everything including the kitchen sink. I have used it for viewing jpegs containing street maps and it works well, although there is no zooming capability when viewing maps. It would have been a nice feature to have. I also bought with it the wireless keyboard and will write separate review for that product. My over all assessment of this product is: it really nice tool to have if it works for you, but it can be a nightmare if it starts giving you problems. I've had to hard boot it a couple of times and it deleted all my data and I had to start from scratch again. But the thing is jam packed with killer features. Timothy Daniels' review sums it up well "Look out if things go wrong" although I haven't had as much bad luck with it as he has.. poor guy :( The one I really like is that I can play monopoly on the thing ( $20 download from palm website ) and I thoroughly enjoy playing it with my nephews and nieces virtually anywhere, without having to setup a board and money and cards etc.. Date: 2006-03-18 Is TX really better? Weel, I have a T5. I had a cuple soft resets only. TX is black. Not as nice as T5 with its business grey color. Should it have Wi-fi? Sure! And a voice recorder. Perhaps bluetooth is enough for you too. But at least you get a powerfull processor. TX is 300. T5 has 416. Lifedrive also has 416, but has so many features that slows its speed. T5 has 256Mb of memory. TX has half of it. Sometimes is useful to have a mode drive, which TX doesn't. Do you miss a camera? Buy one with a printable quality and with zoom. It should have at least 3,1 Mpixels to print. So if you want a PDA with the highest thrust go with T5. It doesn't have much optionals but ou can step all way down and go fast!!
