Solid phone so far, a little slow
I was hesitant to purchase the Q9m after reading extensive poor reviews of the original Q on both Amazon and CNET. Two weeks into my ownership, I am happy overall with the phone. I do not have the data package, so I basically use it as a phone/PDA combo, not for wireless e-mail/Internet.

Likes:
- Solid feel, yet fits in pocket easily and isn't overly heavy
- Keyboard is great
- ActiveSync with Outlook via USB and Bluetooth works smoothly
- Affordable price with no required data package
- So far, battery life is fine. I leave Bluetooth on for most of the day and it doesn't run the battery down excessively. But most of the complaints about the original Q's battery life seemed to be with the Wireless Sync users (which I don't use).
- Not having to carry a separate cell phone & PDA!

Dislikes:
- Windows media player - not intuitive to use like an iPod
- Underpowered processor - The phone cannot multi-task very well. For example, if it is in the middle of ActiveSyncing w/ Outlook or listening to an mp3, it sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to open another application (including regular phone functions). Also, I put 9,000 contacts into the phone, and it takes a while to search for a contact by name.
- Verizon Wireless does not offer an affordable data plan ($45/month for unlimited data is more than 2X the AT&T iPhone data plan - yes, I know AT&T's iPhone data network is much slower than Verizon's)

Contrary to some reviews I saw with the original Q, the supplied USB cord will both charge the battery & ActiveSync with your computer at the same time.

Keyboard is a vast improvement over the original Q
I just bought this phone to replace my original Motorola Q, which in turn replaced a Treo 750W. Let me be begin by saying that I was a longtime Blackberry user until my firm switched to the Windows Mobile platform. I'm on Verizon now, and no Windows Mobile phone offered by Verizon equals the Blackberry platform in my opinion. I feel that the Blackberry phones offer superior speed and performance, an interface that's much easier to navigate than Windows Mobile, and VASTLY superior ergonomics, especially the keyboards.

I hated the Treo: washed-out display, horrible keyboard, slow and prone to crashing, heavy with a clumsy form factor.

I bought the Q to get its better display, thinner form factor, and marginally better keyboard.

The Q9 improves on the original Q in only one area - its the same phone internally in all practical respects - and that's the keyboard. If you are primarily a business user, you'll find the Q9 to be much faster to use and much better for accurate typing - in fact, it rivals the best Blackberries. The cosmetics are slightly different from the original Q - it resembles the black Q to some extent in that it has some rubberized gripping surfaces. Other than the minor cosmetic differences and the vastly improved keyboard (and it's music capabilities which are irrelevant to me - I prefer my iPod Nano), it's the same phone.

But if you need a good keyboard on a Widows Mobile phone and you're using Verizon, this is the phone for you.
