Great So Far!
I received my reader a week ago and couldn't be happier!! Not only is it a great way to read books, but also, Sony is a very professional company to work with! There software for the reader is extremely easy to use and simplier than itunes!!
I purchased this to just read popular books and the Sony Ebook website has a great assortment of popular and best seller books. The price on new release books is a little high - but just wait and they become reduced to a price that doesn't hurt your wallet!
Of course this is perfect for me as I live on a sailboat in the Virgin Islands and room to store a ton of books is very limited.
Just to let every understand, if you don't want your battery to run down go into advanced settings and shut your reader down completely!!! This keeps the battery up and ready when you are!

Good product, horrible battery
I have no issue with product, if the battery had held up. 4 months have past, and the battery no longer holds a charge. I have it fully charged, don't use it at all. Next day, battery is dead. Sony expects me to pay for the dead battery...which after four months, is a little annoying.

So, great product that is now a high tech brick.

Great product with some quality control issues
Sony did so much right with this. The EInk is very easy on the eyes, and the size and weight of the device are similar to a paperback. One battery charge is good for about 2,000 pages (not the 7,500 Sony claims). I did not find the page turns to be at all distracting - after all, when turning the page of a physical book there's a slight delay as well. The buttons are well placed, and once I figured out the idiosyncracies of the software, loading the Reader with books and articles became very easy (though putting a book into a collection should be a one-step process, not two). There are also active support forums for the device on the web.

However, there are quality control issues. I've had it six months and have had two problems -- one with the power button, one with the battery. I paid for the first repair (actually I paid a flat fee and Sony exchanged it); to Sony's credit they not only waived the fee for the second repair but also paid for the shipping both ways.

I still would recommend that you seriously consider an extended warranty if the place you buy this from offers it.

personal review for PRS-505
well. this is A fine e-reader indeed.
however, anyone who wants to purchase this, may need reconsider one's purpose to use it. I simply grade this for reading Electonics paper, thesis, white paper even books.

Good things. easy to use, upload, handy, well shaped.
bad things. not good for any other language, brightness, need to re-format pdf to be visible, lame interfacing speed.

in out region of US, After-Servise would be the problem someday.
you may know "SONY" only support to open their service in the location where you bought thier stuff.

Fulfills all requirements
I wanted to create a quick review of the Sony Reader as the other Amazon reviews helped me a lot with deciding whether to purchase:

I spent over a month researching and considering the pro's and con's of this device, both as a technology and as in comparison to Amazon's kindle. I spent almost 4 hours each day commuting and was tired of carrying heavy books with me. I decided to buy and ebook as it would allow me to carry around many books in a lighter package than a standard paper-back. I purchased the Sony Reader as it was smaller and cheaper than the Kindle.

I have not been disappointed. Over the past two weeks I have purchased books online, downloaded free books and converted documents and web pages for my Sony Reader. I have found it to be just as easy on the eyes as a paper-back book, but easier to read as there is no physical page turning involved.

Here would be my point of view on the negatives that I have seen in other reviews:

Poor battery life: I have probably allowed the device to charge for 3 hours over the last two weeks, while I have been copying books onto it. Over those two weeks, while commuting, I am yet to see the battery indicator go below Full.

Poor PDF support: This is a valid point. I am able to view PDFs on the reader, but they are slower and harder to read than normal books. However, I am only interested in the text, so export these to normal .rtf files, and they work great.

Slow page turns: It takes me more time to turn the page of a physical book than it does to hit the button and wait for the screen to refresh. I am a relatively fast reader and have not found my reading interrupted by the page refresh time.

Badly designed software: I did not find the software difficult to use at all. There is also some free software which performs a similar role and works very well.

Poor online book selection: I considered this prior to purchasing the reader. However, it is easy to visit the Sony book store and see if they have enough books of your taste to suffice.

Overall, I am very happy with this purchase so far and hope to continue to be so.
