User Submitted Sony PRS-505/LC Blue Digital Book Reader Reviews (cont...)Date: 2008-02-25 A great product - if you have your expecations right! The product is exactly what I expected, since I read a lot of previews and reviews prior to purchasing it. It is a great way to carry along your favorite books - in fact, I have put most of my old-time faves on the ample built-in memory and on an additional SD card, so I am taking over 400 books on the go with me. The power seems not to run-out at all, so a quick connect every week or so will keep you charged. The only things I don't like but expected, since they are a part of the e-Ink technology, are the background color (a slightly whiter tint would've been great) and the sluggish menu navigation. I wouldn't recommend to use as an MP3 player, as the sound seems not-so-great - however it can be used to listen to a few instrumental tunes while reading. One final problem - PDF files are rarely displayed properly, unless specifically formatted for the screen, so don't expect to be able to read PDFs with ease. I will suggest that PDFs and any other file formats are converted to TXT, since the readability of text files is great. Overall, a great product and a true book replacement - but if you have wrong expectations (namely, that one can use this to view work-related PDFs or RSS feeds; or that the screen is a blistering-fast and back-lit LCD) you may be deeply disappointed. Date: 2008-02-24 Better then Startrek I finally have the startrek PADD, which I've wanted since I was a kid. The design is very slick, and the device is made out of metal and is very well put togeather, I'm not expecting this to break for a long time. The screen is amazing, I didnt see one in real life before I bought it, I love the look of this screen. I started reading the user manual right out of the box and thought I had crashed it, but it turned out that the power ran out on the device since it wasnt charged when it came from the factory. When the power runs out the screen doesent have power to re-ionize the screen, and the page is "stuck". I plugged it back into my computer for about 30 minutes and used the reader for 4 hours with no power issues, then let it charge overnight. Linux compatability: I downloaded an app called libprs500 (google it for instructions on how to download for your build of Linux), it works great. I am able to add/remove books from the device with ease. I found that I just need to navigate to the Audio folder to add mp3's, the reader will build the library/metadata for you when you unplug the device. I've been grabbing out of copyright books from manybooks.net, which allows download of Sony Reader format so I dont need to convert anything. These books look great and are 100% free. The only issue I've seen with this so far was the audio quality of the mp3 playback. I hooked up a set of noise cancelling headphones to it and had some slight feedback when listening. I plugged in my Apple headphones which came with my ipod, and do not have static problems. My noice cancelling headphones do not have static on other devices. Date: 2008-02-14 Sony Reader E-reader 6IN LCD Portable Dark Blue E-book Approx 170 Pix/inch I normally, don't write reviews. Most products do what they say and that is it. I bought the Sony Reader about a month ago. I have never been in love with a product like I am with this one. When I first bought it and went to download books, I had a problem. Ok, I will admit, the problem was my fault. If I had taken the time to read the instructions, I wouldn't have had any problems. I take it everywhere with me. I tell everyone about it. It is like having a friend that is always with you. I was sick and finished the book I was reading. Now, if this had been a regular go to the store and pay it, I would have been in trouble. Instead, hooked up to the Internet and download a few books, and never had to leave the house. I like the fact that it is the same as reading a book. I did have trouble with not having two pages, but that didn't last long. I have even learned to time turning the pages, so there is not a big pause in between. Do I have any complaints? Only one, but it would be the same complaint with any reader. I would like to be able to watch videos on it. It has music, now if they can make one this size that does everything, then great! Date: 2008-02-11 fabulous invention, I love it!!!!!!!!!!! I love new products, and this my dear amazon buddies is one of the best. I love the idea of carrying around several books in this light weight reader. I find it very easy to read, and yes it would be nice if it had a back light, but hey my regular books do not have one. I will always go to the book store and buy gorgeous picture books but this is a great addition to your library. You can love this and love your regular books. Just open your mind and embrace technology. Date: 2008-02-05 Great eBook device! I purchased my Sony eReader device from Borders, and am very pleased with it. The Sony eBook store has a lot of titles to offer, and after some trial and error on my part I found the best formats in which to import the titles to my device is .rtf, .pdf formats do not import so well, and if you do, they are best viewed in the landscape mode, the reader library software does not tag the pdf files when it imports them. I also found a small freeware program online called BBeB Binder which converts text and html files into Sony's .lrf files and it does a great job so I can import all my gutenberg ebooks and the books I have gotten from Baen.com which are in open formats. For me, I find the device perfect. The only problem I had at first with it was after transferring a bunch of titles over and disconnecting it from my computer, was it appeared to freeze up, but then I realized that it was sorting the files by title and author, the more files on the device the longer it takes, but I can put up with that. I initially started looking at the Amazon Kindle before I new the Sony eReader existed. But after meeting someone with one, and holding it and looking at it the clunkiness of the Kindle put me off, there are buttons all over the place, which is a disaster waiting to happen when shifting it from hand to hand. Plus the guy told me it is hard to hold properly, and he is forever hitting a button and changing the page, or exiting the file he is reading. And yes, you have to use a booklight for reading in the dark, but that is not so different from having to use a booklight for a paperback or hardback novel. I bought a small compact 3 led booklight from Borders and it works great for lighting up the screen. I also have a 2 gig memory stick and a 2 gig sd card installed so I have plenty of room to store all of my future ebooks. Everyone has different needs and wants for a reading device, so you should really take a long hard look at each device, and if you can, find someone who has one and see if they will let you look at it, hold it and question them about it first. Borders had a working demo model of the Sony eReader so I got to use it before buying it, and that was what sold me on it. It had all the features I needed.
