User Submitted Coby 4 GB Flash Video MP3 Player with FM Radio (Black) Reviews (cont...)Date: 2008-12-22 Coby - Remarkable Value The Coby 4 GB Flash Video MP3 player enabled me to resist the compelling urge to drop $150 on a video iPod. While the software isn't as elegant as the iPod, the Coby unit includes a simple text reader and an FM radio. It shows up on my iMac desktop as an addressable drive, allowing me to move files in and out of its memory without touching iTunes. It also syncs with Windows Media Player and includes a simple (if imperfect) Windows-only formatting utility for importing video with the proper aspect ratio and file format (.avi.) I have downloaded TV shows and full-length movies (Ben Hur!), etc. and viewed them on the little screen - a very neat trick when ultimate portability is the goal. The text reader mentioned above accepts .txt files only. This means it is handy for off-line reading of any long document that can be saved in that format, including web contents, Word documents, and most of the free online books. (James Joyce/Ulysses is on there now). The mp3 functions are comparable to other mp3 players, although I haven't yet bothered to figure out how it assembles playlists, etc. Surprising to me is the inclusion of the FM tuner, something that adds real value by connecting me to the real world instead of isolating me from it. The touch-screen interface is really quite fun to use, and in principle, trumps Apple's much-vaunted touch wheel. Using my wife's iPod seems so low-tech and old-fashioned to me now. In actual use, the touch screen is a bit too small and sensitive to be ideal - it's just too easy to touch buttons inadvertently. There is a "hold" setting that inactivates the buttons, however, even with "hold" invoked, if the function buttons are touched, the display is interrupted with an on-screen message that tells you that "hold" is turned on. It's an unnecessarily intrusive interruption. All in all, though, for less than $50, this player is my new best electronic friend and constant companion. I am never without a book to read, music to listen to, or a movie to watch. Date: 2008-12-14 Nice MP3 player, but... needs a case to protect the player against falls, Coby should produce their on case because I've been at several stores and haven't been able to find one that fits this player. The earphones are way too big, they should be provided in a smaller size. Other than that the player is excellent for my 10 year old boy, he is pretty happy with it. Date: 2008-12-07 Coby 4gb mp3 player I bought this namebrand because my husband had purchased a lower level coby and he liked it. The first one I got was defective so amazon switched it. This one works well. It automatically syncs with computer when you connect it. But you must go into the options and change the automatic sync so that it doesn't try to download your whole computer. Then loading it becomes very easy. The sceen is a touchscreen which I didn't know so but it has a switch to turn off the touch so that you don't accidentally jump past or replay another song.the navigation is simple when you get use to it. I like it but because for me I had to go through a defective one to get a good one that says the company has a problem with efficiency Date: 2008-12-07 Not for everyone. If you go buying this product with extremely low expectations you will be pleasantly surprised. It is quite a sleek mp3 player, extremely good price, and cool features. But I just had too many complaints to suggest this device. I bought the 8 gigabyte version at my work because I was soon to buy a Zune and the Coby was on sale for $50. I figured I would give it a chance. I like that it's shiny and the touch controls are cool and they glow! The little button on the top left is cool also it changes the view in some lists, really nice when you are looking at pictures. There is also preset EQ's which is nice. Comes with a nice suede case. But that is about where the pros end on this device. The menu is extremely bland but a lot of people don't care about that. Navigation is slow. The device will only respond to a hit in one direction so fast, so going through large lists is a pain. You can't change the background image. The way the music is organized is odd. If you go under artists then click on an artist it will list all the songs by that artist in alphabetical order. I couldn't find any way to change that, but if there is someone please correct me. If you just browse the device though under music though you can have it be organized Artist>Album since that's the way the folders are on the device. Getting album art to work with a mp3 player using WMP is a pain as well. The sound quality is also quite bad. I compared it to my 1st gen iriver clix with my J2 jbuds and it was very noticeable that the Coby sounded bad. Can't comment on the video quality because I didn't mess with it at all. Other than watch a few seconds of the videos on it. I was fine with everything about the device until I realized the sound quality was lacking... quality. I returned it the next day. I could imagine getting this for a younger kid with a decent size music collection. If you take your music somewhat seriously though I don't suggest the Coby. I have an 8gb Zune now and I am extremely happy. Date: 2008-12-06 Very nice, but read important info for videos! This is a very nice player, with great sound and picture quality. It is very thin and nice looking. If you want to put songs or pictures on it, its easy. HOWEVER IF YOU WANT VIDEOS, PLEASE READ THIS SO YOU KNOW HOW! THE DIRECTIONS THAT COME WITH IT ARE NOT CORRECT! This comes with a converter CD that is supposed to convert videos to the proper format for this player. It does convert, but only converts from WMV format to the correct format. So, first use a converter of your choice to convert your video to WMV format. You can download converters online. Some are free, some are not. I like Prism, because its free and converts large videos. After converting the video to WMV format, then you can use the program that comes with the player to convert from WMV to the format needed by the player. I have not yet found an online converter that converts to the proper format for this player. (220x176) Then you just drag it from where its saved to the player. A window may come up saying its not the correct format, but as long as its 220x176 it should work. Now that I know this, I love it! So far, I have 5 movies on the player and only used up half the space.
