User Submitted Peek Pronto Mobile Messaging Device with Lifetime Service Included (Grey) ReviewsDate: 2010-02-07 Perfect for those who fit in it's target audience This device does one thing only-- gets email. It does have push email as well. This device does nothing other than get email, and that's the point of Peek products-- simple, streamlined, fast, and easy! This device would be great for someone who didn't have much money to pay for a monthly fee for a regular cell phone, a senior citizen or teenager who wants to be connect but who you don't want to give a full on computer or smart phone that could rack up additional charges, etc. The device runs on the T-Mobile or AT&T network depending on where you are, and will have the same coverage as those providers. The device is easy to use & setup, and while the screen is high quality the text isn't the largest so it may not be the best for someone with poor vision. Battery life is great, performance is great, and for anyone who has used a blackberry with a scroll wheel this has the scroll wheel and the menu navigation will feel very familiar. If you have the money to spare and have a family member who would really appreciate it, the unlimited lifetime Peek would be a really awesome gift for someone getting back on their feet, doesn't have much budget, or simply doesn't want to do anything more than email. Date: 2010-01-06 Peek Pronto with Lifetime service - 5 stars in every way! I first saw the Peek Pronto in an airline magazine a couple of months ago. After reading lots of reviews, I took the plunge and ordered my Peek Pronto from Amazon last month. I opted for the "lifetime service" version for $277 (discounted from $299) - no monthly fees - ever. I've long wanted "pocket email" and have tried several smart phones, none of which worked very well. I went back to a basic phone and resigned to using WiFi on my laptop for email on the road. The Peek seemed to be a great way to get back into portable email. Well, after a month of use I'm completely delighted with how well it works. I had it set up and running in less than 5 minutes out of the box - email setup is INCREDIBLY easy - just enter your email address and password. That's it. No SMTP, port number, SSL, and all that other stuff you need to know to use email on other devices. The Peek engineers have worked out all the settings just right, and it simply works. Some reviews have complained about the speed - and I will agree, email and text delivery is NOT "instant". But I don't care - I get all my emails within MINUTES (not seconds) and texts come in plenty fast to carry on a conversation - albeit with a slight delay. But for MOST of us, the Peek is just fine on delivery speed. The display is bright and crisp, and easy to read even without my reading glasses. The buttons feel good and have a good 'click' to them - I haven't had typing errors at all, whereas on my old Treo 700 I was always missing letters. The construction of the Peek is robust - the unit has a nice 'heft' to it, and a textured rear steel panel to provide a little more grip when "thumb typing". I also appreciate the clever "email info" feature they provide - if you look under "contacts" you'll find a number of email links to Peek that will return info to you - sort of like the "fax back" systems of a decade ago. For example, pull up maps@getpeek.com and put an address in the subject line. Within a few minutes you'll be sent 2 high-res images - one an overview of the area, the other a detailed street view of the address. Same with weather and news headlines - no, it's NOT like using a web browser. But in a pinch, it's a great way to expand the power of the Peek. I have used this feature to my advantage several times lately - works great for what it is. Now the cons: The scroll wheel is on the top right - not a great spot. I have worked out a weird "left hand scroll" technique that works, but isn't natural. Left handed folks will probably find it awkward to use. The scroll wheel SHOULD have been in the center top, right below the display. Also, the scroll wheel doubles as a push button - but it's pretty stiff and takes a pretty hard push to activate. Combined with being on the side rather than the top, it takes a little practice to get the leverage right without having to use both hands. I'm hoping over time it'll 'break in' and not be quite so tough to push. Last on the minus side, the menus that come up on the scroll wheel are not arranged very logically. You'll find you have to scroll pretty far to get to common functions (like return to inbox, although hitting 'enter' will do that, or use the 'back' button). It would be better to have the scroll menu options be arranged by "most likely to be needed" order instead of the category-based arrangement they use. But the negatives are SO overshadowed by the positive benefits of the Peek that I really have no problem adapting to them. If you want an EASY and pretty powerful email/text handheld, you'll be hard pressed to beat the Peek - especially with the lifetime option. Granted, that's the lifetime of the UNIT, not the user - but even if you only use it for 1 or 2 years, you'll save a LOT of money over a data plan on a cell phone. 5 stars - highly recommend, despite the minor negatives. Date: 2010-01-03 Quite Impressed Ever since the original blackberry I have been looking for a email only device. The peek is simple and easy to setup. The lifetime service option is just too attractive to pass on with carrier data plan prices getting higher and higher. Points of note: - Peek runs on t-mobile network. - Lifetime service requires no registration or activation. - Accesses MS Exchange via OWA (no push or contact sync). Date: 2009-12-17 A quick Peek for my future Peek is indeed out-of-the-box easy to use and quick enough for my needs, though sometimes it would be nice to be able to access the Web to follow a link on the spot. However, when I think about the price, I'm happy to wait until I access my computer to do that exploring. Pushing the scroll wheel as a button makes sense, but the scroll isn't as quick and comfortable as a regular button. Nonetheless, the overall function and handling works well, particularly after learning a few of the tips. The Peek feels like a trusty buddy, that gets the job done for me. Date: 2009-12-01 Brilliant ~ Do not have a contract I bought this device for my daughter who is 14. My husband and I did not want a contract with any phone company because I feel they are too outrageous especially for texting. Since my daughter rarely talks on the phone, she prefered only a texting device so she could keep her conversations private. She loves her Peek, I love the fact it's easy on the budget and we have no fixed contract. I am very pleased with this product. I think the only thing that is problematic (very small issue) is that it doesn't have a fixed number. But taken all together, you can't beat this product. She is the envy of all her friends which is pretty important to a teenager. #Success!
